What is the Preparation Time for this Recipe? 

It takes an hour to prepare this recipe. It takes 4 hours to handle everything in total. You get 8 servings from this recipe. 

Ingredients

You would need the following ingredients:

● 5 lbs chuck beef

o You need to remove all excess gristle and fat and then cut it into around two-inch chunks. 

● 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour 

● Ground pepper and coarse salt to taste

● 2-3 tbsp vegetable oil

● Onion, chopped coarsely 

● 2 sliced celery stalks 

● 2 smashed garlic cloves 

● 1/4 cup of tomato paste 

● 1 cup of merlot wine

● 28 oz crushed tomatoes

● ½ tsp dried thyme 

● 2 dried Bay leaves 

● 3 lbs vegetables (parsnips, turnips, carrots, and potatoes, cut and peeled into half-inch chunks) 

Steps in Cooking This Recipe 

The First Step 

You need to mix your beef using flour and then season everything using pepper and salt. Using a large pot or oven, heat about 2 tbsp of oil on medium-high. Work this into two batches and then shake off all excess flour and then sear all of your beef on every side until it looks brown for around 8 to 10 minutes. Make sure you make use of extra amounts of oil when frying for the second time. After you’re done, transfer your beef inside a plate and then set it aside. 

The Second Step 

Add in ingredients like garlic, celery, and onion to your pot. Then you cook and stir gently until everything softens. It takes around 3 to 5 minutes. You can now add in your tomato paste, cook, and occasionally stir until everything darkens for roughly 1 to 2 minutes. You can now add your wine and then scrape off brown bits from the bottom of what you used to cook. That's either the oven or the pot. Don’t stop till the liquid has reduced by half for around 2 to 3 minutes. 

The Third Step 

Add in other ingredients. Make sure they boil and reduce the heat to medium-low, and then simmer. Occasionally stir for two hours. If the liquid reduces, then make sure you add some more water. 

Then you transfer your beef to another bowl, a large one, and then pass all the remaining contents through a fine-mesh sieve. Keep stirring and tasting till it tastes like fine veggie winter stew is ready.

You can consume your stew using anything you like. It could be bread, rice, or chicken. If it remains, you could keep the rest in the fridge.

How to Make a DIY Fire Pit

6. 6” x 12” x 2-3/8” paver stones.

7. 9” x 4” x 2-1/2” firebrick. 

8. 2x4 screed board.

Plan your fire pit design

A backyard fire pit is a common landscape feature. They are not only attractive but provide an outdoor gathering place. 

A firepit is normally constructed from fireproof material on a flat, level area at least 25 meters from the house or any tree. They are also governed by strict local building codes, so therefore, before you start construction of your fireplace, know the codes of your area.

Step 1: Build the foundation

You first pound the rebar stake into the ground at the center of the fire pit and mark the circumference. Attach a string to the stake, measure half of the circumference then tie the other end of the string to a spray paint can. Pull on the string lightly and walk around the stake, using spray paint to paint the boundaries of the circumference. 

Then dig the space out to a depth of 6” and using the same method as above, mark an inner circle. This will be the inner edge of the fire pit wall.

Make a foundation by mixing concrete and water and then laying the wet concrete between the two circles so that it is level with the ground. Press rebar towards the concrete for reinforcement and then allow the wet concrete to dry.

Step 2: Build outer wall

This is the time to lay the stones. First, mix the mortar and then shovel about 2" into the concrete base. Lay the stones in the mortar. If you decide to use natural stone it better for you to mix the sizes and colors. You should also choose stone faces that are attractive and match your outline. A chipping hammer can also be used to shape individual stones.

As the first wall takes shape along the outside edge of the fire pit, lay down the fire brick from the inner wall of the structure.

Step 3: Build the inner fire brick wall

It is important that as you fill in the gaps in between the mortar you also scrape away the excess and periodically measure its edges. This is to ensure that the inside and the outside of the wall maintain thickness and its circular shape.

Continue to raise both the fire bricks on the inside and the stones on the outside and filling gaps between them with mortar. Finish the structure by laying a cap of vetted flat fieldstones on the top wall. Make sure that the top is flat by added mortar to make an even surface.

Step 4: Finish the fire pit

The finishing touches will include painting using a standard paintbrush, brushing the exterior of the stone to remove debris. You can spray-paint the inside brick with black to have a uniform finish.

How to Make Soap for Dogs

Essential Oils for Dog Soaps

Cedarwood: Cedarwood is a sweet-smelling base that blends in well with the other oils and is flea and mosquito repellant.

However, be cautious while shopping for essential oils as some are reported to be a bit harmful to pets.

Materials Needed for Dog Soap:

•                3/4 cup of distilled water

•                1/4 cup of lye (also known as 100% sodium hydroxide)

•                2/3 cup of olive oil

•                2/3 cup of oil blend (sunflower or safflower works)

•                1/8 cup of castor oil

•                1/8 cup of white distilled vinegar or lemon juice

•                A few drops each of the essential oils earlier listed

Instructions:

•                Pour the lye into the distilled water, stir it in, and set aside till required.

•                Blend the essential oils together, boil using mild heat where the temperature is below 100°F.

•                While stirring constantly, add the oils to the lye mixture.

•                Stir for at least five minutes, using a stick blender where necessary until it has a yogurt-like consistency.

•                Pour in the cup of castor oil, white distilled vinegar or lemon juice, and the drops each of the essential oils.

•                Properly blend all ingredients.

•                Pour into molds and leave for at least 24 hours to cool and form.

•                Cure for 3 to 4 weeks.

Indoor Plants: Wick and Grow (How Does It Work?)

You could decide to go on vacation and leave your plants behind while you are away on your trip. But how will they stay watered so they don’t die? There is a new “invention” called Wick & Grow, which is a type of planter and plant set-up that allows the plant to slowly seep up water from a reservoir below inside its own planter pot, so it stays hydrated.

What is Wick & Grow?

With the use of cotton strips planted in the soil of each plant, they slowly wick moisture and water components up through the soil to the roots of the plant. During this process, the root zone remains moist without being soaked. Creating such a setup is quite easy and it is not as expensive as getting someone to stay in your apartment while you go on a vacation.

You might want to drop your plants under a tray of water, so they would keep getting water, but this is a bad idea because continuous watering in your absence would drown the roots in no time.

The roots are fans of oxygen, so if you sop wet soil, it could easily rot, catch an infection or mold too. Making use of a simple wicking system would allow the right amount of moisture to get to the dirt to keep your plants alive.

How to Wick & Grow:

Items Needed:

The things you need to create your own indoor wick and grow planter includes the following:

A house plant, cotton fabric, scissors, a large bowl of water taller than the container of the plant, and a small bowl of water.

Directions:

You should prepare the wicks by cutting the cotton fabric into strips of about 1″ wide by 12″ long. Then you just lay an end of the strip into the soil. Gently wrap it around the base of the stem of the plant, loosely. Then you use one of your fingers to dig into the ground without touching the roots. Gently bury the end of the strip into the soil.

From here you get the tall bowl with water and put it close to the plant. Get the other end of the strip into this large bowl of water. Make sure the cotton strip is taller than the plant bowl. Then the water would slowly wick from the tall bowl into the ground. Making use of the cotton strip.

Or, you could first tie the wick around the stem of the plant not tightly like the previous method and then bury the stem in the ground.

Then get the free end of the wick into a bowl of water which is smaller than that of the plant pot’s width.

Get the pot of the plant and put it into a bowl of water. The aim here is for the plant to rest inside the bowl and a huge amount of water under it. Then the water would wick up through the cotton strip from the little pot under the plant.

Step 1- Prep Materials

Step 2- Melt the Wax and Add Scent

Add water to the bottom pan of your double boiler. For the top pan in your double boiler, you may want to consider using an older pot or vessel, something you’re not too attached to, as it will soon be covered in wax.

Next, place your wax into the top pan and allow it to melt at a temperature of about 185 degrees. Add in your candle scent when your wax is approximately 180 °F. Fish out any leftover pieces of old wick using a tongs.

Step 3- Prepare your Teacups and Wicks

Now it’s time to lay out your tea cups and add in the candle wicks. Measure the depth of each tea cup and cut your wicks so they are 2 inches taller than the top of your tea cup. Use a wick holder to steady your wick in place so it doesn’t move around as your candle cools.

Step 4- Filling your tea cups

Once your tea cups are prepared and your wax is scented and melted, it’s time for the final step. Carefully pour the wax into each cup, stopping ½ inch before you reach the top so you don’t overflow the candle.

Step 5- Cool and Enjoy

You’ll want to allow your candles to cool for at least 6-8 hours before attempting to light them and enjoy.
